The government may do just that if Senator Jeremiah Dental (R-Alabama) has his way. Denton has introduced a bill (S. 1090) which is designed to eliminate organizations such as Planned Parenthood, by appropriating $90 million for three years, but restrict the funding to organizations which do not receive other funding or which do not provide counseling which includes. mentioning abortion referrals. With its emphasis on chastity, the bill rejects contraceptive information and services as one of the 16 funded services.D

Television evangelists may at tract much smaller audiences than they have been claiming: Jerry Falwell has said his "Old Time Gospel Hour" draws up to 50 million viewers a week nationwide. According to ratings research, he has a much more modest video flock of 1.6 million a week.

Independent studies conducted by

sociologists William Martin of Rice University and Jeffery Hadden of the University of Virginia reveal that nine of the 10 most watched evangelists lost viewers in 1980.

Studying Nielsen ratings figures through! last November, Martin discovered that the 10 most popular video evangelists reached a total audience of about 13.7 million viewers. According to Martin the audience was predominately female, over 50, working and lower class, and true to stereotype likely to live in rural areas, towns and small cities in the South and Midwest. It is also composed almost entirely of believers, most of whom are members of conservative Protestant churches."

Hadden using Arbitron figures for February, 1980 found that 66 syndicated religious programs reached a combined audience of 20.5 million. There was a sharp drop-off in viewership below the top 10 evangelism programs, including those of Oral Roberts, Rex Humbard, Jimmy Swaggart, Jerry Falwell, the PTL Club, and the 700 Club.
